More or less every year I have been writing a short post detailing the cards I use so here is a 2023 edition of the post. You can find previous editions in the following links (2022 | 2021 | 2019).
In 2021 I had two daily driver cards but in 2022 I added a few more and now in 2023 I unfortunately cut back on a few and only added one card permanently to the list.
What I added to the List
Back in 2022 I said I was thinking about getting Citi Double Cash, Venture X, and Upgrade (yuk!) card. I tried to get Venture X but I was repetitively denied. I was able to grab Venture X Business which has since been added to my list of everyday cards. Venture X business has effectively replaced American Express Business Blue Plus (2x) from my wallet. The only reason I might put Blue Plus back into the wallet is that I don’t like metal cards. Unfortunately, there is no plastic version of Venture X Business.
Altitude Reserve is Still Here
I raved about Altitude Reserve back in 2017 and to this day it is still in my wallet. Since Samsung S21, LoopPay (MST) technology has been discontinued, so in theory, it isn’t as easy to use this card through mobile payment as before. But in practice, many stores have adopted mobile payment so the lack of LoopPay technology isn’t felt too much.
Other Changes and Comments
I no longer have an American Express Gold card so I am making it work with an American Express Gold Business. It is not my card of choice though.
On the debit side of things, I have added the Doge card and PrizePool card. I continue to use the Fold bitcoin card but 4% on the Coinbase card is pretty much dead. Speaking of dead, Rakuten and Paceline credit cards are no more so they are off the list.
I have been using my old US Bank’s Cash+ card for 5% on Home utilities, TV, internet, and streaming categories. I had Hilton Aspire in my “no BS list of top three premium keeper cards” in 2018 and I still have it somewhere.
Cards I Want to Add
On a permanent basis, there are only two cards I want to add namely Capital One Venture X and Barclay Wyndham Business.
On a temporary basis, I would love to get another American Express Gold and Platinum (even better if I can get the Schwab variant).
Closing Thoughts
The combo right now is Altitude Reserve plus Venture X Business. Business Gold is in there somewhere. Too much metal for my taste.
