I occasionally write about some of the retention offer we get and it is time to write about another around of retention offer on American express cards.
American Express seems to be handing out $595 retention offer on business platinum card like candies. We got $595 retention offer on two business platinum cards (one of which renewed at mere $450 annual fee while another has yet to be hit with an annual fee). This offer doesn’t require any spend and IMO is better than the 80k membership rewards retention offer from 2020. In yet another business platinum card (renewed at annual fee $595), I was offered $350. As mentioned, I decided to keep all three business platinum cards. Unlike it the previous years, I am not going to bother with cancelling the card after getting retention offer. It was fine for a while but it seems too risky now.
Then we were offered $50 credit on Amazon business card like in 2020. Also, $50 offer on Business Blue which is inferior to $50 + $100 offer from 2020.
Unfortunately, I did not get any retention offer on personal gold card or personal platinum card. I wanted to keep a personal platinum card and had tried, without any success, to to fish for retention offer several time. Anyway, I ended up cancelling both personal gold and platinum card.
Update: Got $400 (or 40k MR) after $4k spend in 3 months offer on another personal platinum card that renewed at $695 annual fee. Based on this retention offer thread on flyertalk there is a better offer of $550 (or 55k MR) for $4k spend. I may try to fish for $550 offer, otherwise I will be cancelling this platinum card as well.
Closing Thoughts
I did all of this over chat. Interestingly enough I had attempted to get retention offer on business platinum card (the one that eventually got $350 offer) over chat…over and over again. Eventually, when I wanted to downgrade it (why?), I had called and magically been greeted with $350 offer.
