Once in a while I like to poke the bear. I probably shouldn’t but I do it anyway. In June of 2021 I had applied for IHG card only to get denied for “too many credit cards opened in the last two years associated with you” aka 5/24.
Then in January 2022 I had applied for the IHG card again, however this time around my denial letter did not contain the 5/24 language. Instead it read:
- too many recent requests for credit or reviews of your credit
- a prior credit card or deposit account was closed by Chase
The latter is because few years ago my Chase credit cards were shutdown, however I was able to get back in around May of 2021. It is known that Chase can remember previous shutdown but it is interesting how they cited previous shutdown as a reason for not issuing a co-branded card when they have already issued me a Chase Sapphire Preferred.
I tried to recon this (haha) denial thinking I could slip through (after all 5/24 language wasn’t mentioned in the denial letter) but my overly enthusiast brain forgot that the letter mentions previous closure of a card. Once that was mentioned by the representative, there was no point in doing anything but admitting defeat…for now.
Since one of the denial reason was that I had too many recent credit request, I chose to not apply for new cards. This plan paid off because when I applied for IHG card again in March ” too many recent requests…” was no longer a reason for denial, however 5/24 came knocking:
