Awhile ago American Express offered $50 x2 = $100 offer to some platinum card holders. Since American Express is also offering monthly $30 PayPal credit, it may be natural to attempt to checkout at HomeDepot using PayPal and kill two birds with one stone.
Well, except it may not work. Sure your $30 PayPal credit will be triggered but you may not get your Home Depot offer may not activate.
Here is what the terms and condition of the offer says:
Offer Terms
Enrollment limited. Must first add offer to Card and then use same Card to redeem. Only U.S-issued Consumer Platinum and Consumer Centurion American Express® Cards are eligible. Limit 1 enrolled Card per Card Member across all American Express offer channels. Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to that Card. Offer valid online only at HomeDepot.com. An “eligible transaction” means an online purchase made with a “ship to home” or “ship to store” shipping option only. Excludes in-store purchases, purchases made online but picked up curbside or in-store and purchases made online with a “Scheduled Delivery” shipping option. Not valid on gift card or e-gift card purchases. Excludes Tool, Truck, and Equipment Rental, Installation and Repair Services, Measurement Services, At Home Services, Home Depot Foundation, Home Depot Canada, Home Depot Mexico, Employee Funds, and the Employee Committee. See merchant website for shipping policy. Some merchants may not ship to all areas. Offer is non-transferable. Limit of 2 statement credits (total of $100 back) per Card Member. Offer is available for eligible Card Members with active accounts as of 11/1/2020. The enrolled Card account must not be cancelled or past due to receive statement credits. Any benefit earned from this offer is in addition to the rewards (i.e. Membership Rewards or cash back) earned as part of your existing Card benefits, but your ability to earn spend-based rewards for the purchase will be based on the amount after any statement credit or other discount is applied. Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 6/30/2021, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Note that American Express may not receive information about your qualifying purchase from merchant until all items from your qualifying purchase have been provided/shipped by merchant. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned/cancelled. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the statement credit. For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you may not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it. Amex Offers are dynamic and personalized, so the offers you see may change. By adding an offer to a Card, you agree that American Express may send you communications about the offer.
I have highlighted the key part.
Closing Thoughts
I found out the hard way and obviously Amex (rightfully) won’t budge.
I don’t have the terms & condition for BestBuy offer on me but I suspect it is the same there.
If you’ve not done this offer yet, it is worth reading through the T&C, there are some other conditions like no gift cards, no pickup, no in-store purchase etc but those have been widely discussed and well highlighted at this point.
