Recently Google Fi, previous named Project Fi, offered $100 credit to “viewers” of Ellen Degeneres but this offer barely has been talked about in miles and points community.
As usual I’m late to posting deal (at a cost of not getting indexed by google lol) but I think I tend to makeup for it by giving my readers personal take on the matter.
Unlike everyone else who blasted this deal for not being good, I actually signed up for this deal. That is because Google Fi itself is of much value to travelers like us. More importantly, despite what others may claim, this deal is actually pretty good. It’s not the most amazing thing ever but it is pretty good.
Reason #1: Offer is Actually of $120 Credit
you may use my code 2TWE71 to get $20 referral credit.
This Ellen $100 offer stacks on top of $20 credit you get by using a referral. Thus, this is technically a $120 offer
Remark: Ellen Degeneres offer is valid till January 15, 2018
Reason #2: The Referrer gets $100 Credit
Hold your horse before you claim “oh this post is typical referral pitch post”. Reality is of all the Project Fi posts I’ve made (and I’ve made a lot of them because I like the service) I’ve only ever had one reader signup through the link. Anyway, the referral pitch is actually for you to signup someone you know.
You likely have mom, dad, girlfriend, dog, cat, fish, something else you can signup to this service. Boom you just got $100 credit yourself and “something else” got $120 credit.
Remark: $100 referral credit is valid till January 8, 2018
Reason #3: Easy Terms and Conditions
If you follow this blog then you know that I share a lot of good phone deals (I read about even more of them!) on this blog. Let’s just say this deal is one of the least convoluted deal out there. The terms and conditions are as follows:
- If a device is ordered from Fi, the device must be activated on a new Fi account within 30 days of device shipment and remain active for 30 consecutive days.
- If a user brings their own compatible device to Fi, the device must be activated by 11:59pm PT, 1/31/19, and remain active for 30 consecutive days.
- Afterwards, a service credit of $100 will be applied to the Fi account. Customers should expect to see the credit around 45 – 60 days after activation.
- Service credits will be applied only toward monthly service costs such as data, calls, texts, and device protection; they cannot be applied to device purchase or financing.
You’re likely going to bring your own compatible device (they’ve added a lot more compatible device compared to their their Project Fi days).
Additionally, there is no hard pull for this deal nor do you have to commit long term for this deal.
Reason #4: International Calls
International calls don’t have great meaning these days because of free calls over instant messengers but I constantly find myself needing them. It isn’t cheap where I call so the free credits help.
Reason #5: Call and Data During Travel
In the US Google Fi subscribers can freely switch between Spring, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular network. This is great when travelling within US because with Fi you’re covered almost everywhere.
For international travel, you can use data on supported countries (over 170) at a rate of $10/GB. It is a little expensive for data but you’ll have a peace of mind, plus you won’t have to change SIM.
Reason #6: Pause Service
You can pause the service when you don’t need it. This is what makes Fi a great secondary phone for travelers like us.
- you can pause up Google Fi for up to 3 months. Service will turn on automatically after 3 months.
- per year you can pause up to 180 days
- if you’re in the military then you can pause Google Fi up to 39 months!
- when service is resumed/paused, your monthly bill will be prorated
Closing Thoughts
The $120 deal on its own is a decent deal for us travelers. If you’ve Google Fi as your backup phone, you’ll have a peace of mind. It is great that Fi is officially compatible on iPhones as well.
You can maximize this deal by stacking it on top of referral deal thus yielding referred $120 and referrer $100.
After you qualify for the credit, you can prolong it by pausing and resume the service as needed.
