Today I logged into a family member’s PRG account so I could refer myself. Why am I trying to apply even though I’ve had PRG before? Let’s just say I like poking Amex’s popup bonus denier. Anyway, during the process of referring myself, I noticed something strange. I noticed that one single American Express card (I tried multiple of them) can refer all American express cards with referrals. Family of cards doesn’t matter. Charge or credit card doesn’t matter. Hell, business or personal cards doesn’t matter.
UPDATE #2: Amex pays bonus on whatever card you referred from. Self-refer works. If you’re smart you’ll play hot potato with referrals within the family.
UPDATE: co-branded cards can refer for all personal AND business cards within that brand. Previously personal co-branded cards could not refer to business cards within same brand and vice versa was also true. All Membership Rewards earning cards with referral capability seem to generate referral for all referral eligible cards.
Here are the steps of replicating this deal:
- Once logged in, go to “refer a friend” link at the bottom of American Express page.
- Copy the “your personalized link”. This link has your name on it so be careful while sharing the link.
- Open above link and scroll down to the bottom. You should see a section “explore other cards”. The text clearly says “Click below to find the right Card for you. Your friend will receive a referral bonus if you are approved for any of the Cards with a referral offer.“
- Click on all personal cards to see referral bonus on all personal cards.
- Alternatively click on “looking for a business card?” to check out all business cards with a referral. The header of this page will say “You’ve been referred to an American Express Business Card”.

Closing Thoughts
Big if it works. You can practically refer yourself to any American Express card with referral offer. But that sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?
If you’re in the market for an American Express card with elevated offer then be a guinea pig and signup for one through your own referral.

I tried this, went ahead for the new Rose Gold Rewards and got the same bonus denial message before submitting the app… trying again
So I suppose it’s an easy way to serve up possible referral offers, but if you’re already locked out it’s not a way around. Also I didn’t see especially exciting referral offers either that you couldn’t otherwise find.
You won’t get bonus if you’ve had PRG in the past. Few people in my chat already tried that.
Anyway, this method should be a great way to stack up referral bonus, especially when referral bonuses are elevated (ex: 25k Biz Plat). I suppose you also have the choice to earn MR while referring for Hilton cards which is nice because if you were were to refer within Hilton family then you would be limited to earning Hilton points through referral.
