It is no secret that Membership Rewards (MR) earning Ebates account, coupled with Syncrony issued 3% cashback (which somehow gets converted to MR), is one of the hottest topic in recent months.
It is also well known that old Ebates account don’t have the ability to earn MR (yet) but it is not as known that (according to several DP on the interwebs) Ebates is apparently okay with user creating new account for the purpose of having a MR earning account. Needless to say that I have a new Ebates account earning MR too!
You too can have Membership Rewards earning Ebates account by signing up through (not referral) link given below and connecting a personal American Express card earning Membership Rewards https://www.ebates.com/american-express
It also goes without saying that I also applied for Ebates store card. In typical Synchrony fashion I was approved $5000ish credit limit. Frequent Miler mentions that that it is, for a store card, it is relatively difficult to get, but if I can get approved for it, then probably you can too. Oh and I also recently got Amazon store card from Synchrony…with $5000ish credit limit.
Anyway, in above mentioned Frequent Miler post the author, Greg, mentions that you have to signup for Ebates store card using the email address associated with your (hopefully new) Membership Rewards earning Ebates account. Except I didn’t. Sure, I applied for it while I was logged into my MR earning Ebates account but I used email address associated with old Ebates (cash back earning aka non-MR earning). Greg mentions that it isn’t possible to change from non-MR earning Ebates store card to MR earning one.
Since this whole thing is such a mess, I thought maybe all the knots are not tied well and thought of changing email address associated on my Ebates Visa card. I logged into Synchrony’s account and changed the email address to the one associated with MR earning Ebates account.
The above linked image clearly shows that my Membership Rewards earning account has an Ebates Visa card linked to it.
Closing Thoughts
At least one of the following is likely happening:
- changing email address on Synchrony’s end might allow one switch from cashbaack earning Ebates account to Membership Rewards earning Ebates account.
- applying for Ebates Visa card while logged into Membership Rewards earning Ebates account will link Ebates Visa card to said Ebates account.
Either way, time will tell.

The common denominator is not the email address used. I signed up for the CC as soon as the news broke while logged into the old cash earning Ebates account. Changing the email address in Synchrony to match the new AmEx MR earning Ebates account does not work. “Ebates cash back Visa card holder” still appears in the old cash back account instead of the new MR earning account. That’s my 2 cents, anyway.
yup, I changed my email and it’s still linked to my old cash back account.
Unless somehow it magically links a few days later.
Ibwas one of FMs data point regarding the ebates credit card.
I did the same as you, applied using my old ebates account not realizing thats how they were linked!
I contacted ebates and synchrony and neither could help me.
